Archive News July/December 2015

Last time I reported, I'd been playing King Lear at Theatre for a New Audience in New York, and now, after a long negotiation, there is a tour scheduled for a new production of the play with an English cast directed by Philip Franks - no connection with the US production but a chance for me to have another go at the part. That'll be for twelve weeks from April 1st 2016 and Mary will have the dates and venues. But I hope it'll be at a theatre near you....

And I'm writing a book about the play and the New York experience, which will end with a look forward to our new English production: Oberon Books will publish, hopefully to coincide with the opening.

That's taken most of my time this year. But what I have also done is a production of SHE STOOPS TO CONQUER with Anita Dobson at Bath (where we'll also be taking Lear) which I enjoyed, and I've also revived my ANTON CHEKHOV solo and done a couple of single performances, one in a huge theatre in Barcelona and the second in a tiny one in Girona: it was a feat of surtitling as much as acting...

And, most pleasantly, l've been with Kenneth Branagh's company as Antigonus in the Winter's Tale at the Garrick, which closes next month, though the cinemas are still showing Encores of the filmed version. A really delightful job and the part is a little jewel. And apart from anything else it's given me the opportunity to be married to Judi Dench for the fourth time.... **

Thanks for your interest, and Happy New Year!

Michael is currently still in The Winter’s Tale at the Garrick Theatre in London until January 2016 but April 2016 will see him start off on a UK tour of King Lear. It will commence at the Theatre Royal in Northampton on the 1stApril and there will be performances on the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death on the 23rd April. You can find full details of venues and dates on the above link. There is also a book due for publication In April - King Lear in Brooklyn published by Oberon Books.

For those who can’t get into London to see The Winter’s Tale there is an opportunity to see the production as it’s having a live screening to cinemas worldwide on the 26th November. The link for this is:

I’ve added an article written by Boyd Tonkin for the Independent wondering how actors remember their lines. He interviewed Michael for the article and you can read it by clicking here.

(B/F from Jan/Jun Archives) Michael will be playing Antigonus in The Winter’s Tale at the Garrick Theatre. Full details can be found at  but I think you’ll find tickets are in short supply as Judi Dench was announced to be playing Paulina in the production at the beginning of the booking period!! It doesn’t look as if he’s in any of the other plays but the casting certainly looks interesting.
