John Clare

Stratford-upon-Avon Poetry Festival

The Shakespeare Institute, 21st July 1982

(The 49th Stratford-upon-Avon Poetry Festival brochure): “John Clare (1793-1864) has gradually emerged as the great poet of rural England. If our fields could speak it would be his language. Lyricist, outcast, naturalist, lover, historian, Clare remains unique, and we catch his voice in the work of today’s poets. This programme has been compiled for the festival by Ronald Blythe, the distinguished country writer and President of the John Clare Society.”
